Don't Miss Our ZUMBATHON!
April 16, 2010
"Are you ready to dance?" shouts an energetic dancer as the

beat begins to pick up.  A large group begins to wiggle, jump
and clap as they are doing the Mambo in unison-these people
are not at a party or in a night club, they are in an aerobics
studio at the YMCA of Saratoga's Malta Branch. The Monday
night class of forty-three participants is taking a Zumba®
class and loving every moment.

Zumba® classes are not only taking the nation by storm-but
Saratoga Springs area as well. The YMCA of Saratoga is now
offering Zumba classes at its Saratoga Springs, Wilton and
Malta Branches. The Zumba fitness program is a fusion of Latin rhythms and international music with easy-to-follow moves to
create a dynamic, fun, and effective cardio workout. The class
features an interval training format incorporating fast and slow
rhythms and resistance training to tone and sculpt your body
while burning fat. Participants burn hundreds of calories and
have a great time while getting an incredible workout.

"Zumba is definitely one of the hottest crazes in the fitness industry! This "feel good" workout works the core and helps to
increase agility and strength. Besides the hot music and fun atmosphere, a participant can burn approximately 500 calories
per hour, which is as much as taking a cycle class for an hour,"
shares Yonka Perkins, Senior Health and Wellness Director at
the YMCA of Saratoga.

The YMCA of Saratoga is offering this "feel good" class to all
its members and everyone in the community at a special event-
they are holding a Zumbathon on Friday, April 16th from 6:00 to
8:00 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs Branch. The instructors will
be Maria Forbes, Stacey Doltz, Audrey Mangini, Yonka Perkins, Deb Rafferty, Angel Whitbeck and Ivy White. The event will benefit our 2010 We Build People Annual Scholarship Campaign. There will be a silent auction and great raffle prizes. A donation of $20.00/person is suggested. You do not need to sign-up in advance.

This is a wonderful opportunity to try out a Zumba class and

help the YMCA of Saratoga's scholarship program.  Don't miss
the fun! For more information, contact Yonka Perkins at
583-9622, ext. 118 or

yonka@ymcasaratoga.org.

"We have been blessed with a scholarship in our difficult financial time and our children would miss out on these positive experiences without the assistance of funding. I can only hope and pray, someday when employment returns, that we can provide scholarship money to other families in need.  Passing it forward, as we so often did in the past."

Healthy Family Meals

Keeping it interesting

Children need a wide variety of nutritious foods for proper growth and development. To introduce your kids to different foods, try serving a new fruit, vegetable, or entree once or twice a week. Make sure to serve additional items that you know your kids will eat, just in case the new food is a total flop. Even if your kids won't eat it at this time, don't throw in the towel prematurely. If it's a food that you enjoy, make it again for yourself.  Ask your children at least to taste it each time you serve it, and keep their less than complimentary comments to themselves.

Get creative and think outside the box when getting your kids to try new meals. Try to plan a theme to add excitement.

Pirate's Treasure Dinner

1 Treasure chest of chicken (square plastic container with baked chicken strips)

1/2 cup golden coins (round sliced carrots)

1/4 cup Pearls (yogurt covered raisins)

1/2 cup low fat chocolate or vanilla "Pirate" pudding

2 Walk the plank whole-wheat breadsticks.

Draw a treasure map for a small trinket to find after the meal for a little fun and maybe a pirate story for bedtime. A pirate hat for the little one will only add to the excitement.

To SEE, HEAR, TOUCH and SMELL are the goals of the YMCA Sensory Walk at the Saratoga Springs branch of the YMCA.  Thanks to the efforts of Chris Getman, an Eagle Scout, we have signs, picnic tables, benches and planters.  The signs change seasonally and new ones will be in place soon for spring and summer.  We are also looking for a couple of bird houses, a butterfly house, a bat house and a solitary bee house.  If you can donate something or would like to help in any way contact Julie VanDeusen at julievandeusen@gmail.com or 899-4937.
