Plant, Nurture, Harvest

Short on space for personal gardening? Join our "Giving Garden" and turn personal opportunity into a community gift. We provide the garden while you provide the TLC, and the Franklin Community Center Food Bank benefits from all of our efforts with fresh produce. Give a little, take a little! This project is in cooperation with Seeds for Peace.

We have already made six deliveriesto the EOC soup kitchen (picture 12-18 grocery bags full of salad greens!). They serve 65 to 125 people, 6 days a week, and are happy to serve fresh salad with the meals. Any surplus greens are passed out to the recipients. Today, we pulled our first yellow squash, cucumber and zucchini, and soon we will have beans and radishes. If you are interested in tending a section in the garden, weeding, watering, etc., please contact Paige Minear at 583-9622, ext. 116 or paige@saratogaregionalymca.org.

Activate America

Putting in a full day at the office behind a desk for work could mean more back and neck pain.

Sitting down too long can also lead to poor circulation.

Being office-bound doesn't have to mean being stagnant.

Some things you can do are simple chair exercises. Just standing up and sitting down slowly and doing that about 10 or 12 times just to get your heart rate going a little bit.

This gets you and your blood moving. Another tip:

You can lift your legs up and squeeze your quads, then push, point and flex your foot.

A lot of people hold stress in their neck and shoulders.

Some good shoulder rolls are nice, breathing in, squeezing your shoulder blades together and then retracting down.

Just throw in some standing leg raises for a mini all-around workout.

Being at a desk job shouldn't cost you your health. A few simple movements an keep both your body and mind active.

STAY HYDRATED!

It's hot out! And that means we're sweating more, therefore we should be hydrating more than usual. Hydrating properly doesn't mean drinking a lot of whatever you can get your hands on. Beverages high in sugars and caffeine work against your body's efforts to remain hydrated and can leave you feeling sluggish in the summer heat. Whether you're outside playing hide and seek, running, gardening, riding your bike, or just hanging out by the pool, you should be drinking water or an electrolyte replenishing sports drink to keep your body functioning at its peak performance level. You can even get creative and make popsicles or slushies using fruit flavored sports drinks to make the experience a little more refreshing. Some fruits, like watermelon and grapes, are also a great way to replenish fluids, as they are high in water content...not to mention delicious! These days, reusable water bottles come in every color, size, shape and pattern that your kids won't mind toting around on the go.

So, go play, but remember to stop and hydrate along the way!
